UPEI Panthers Hockey and Basketball Teams Achieve Playoff Success
Four teams from the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) have advanced to the next round of their respective Atlantic University Sport (AUS) playoffs following a series of thrilling victories on February 20. Both UPEI hockey teams achieved narrow one-goal wins, while the UPEI basketball teams also triumphed in their quarter-final matchups at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
In men’s hockey, the UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies with a score of 3-2, successfully sweeping their best-of-three quarter-final series. The women’s hockey team mirrored their male counterparts, winning by the same margin in an intense game that required three overtime periods. This victory marks the first time since the 2018-19 season that the men’s hockey team has progressed to the semifinals.
In basketball, the UPEI women’s team triumphed over the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a score of 71-55, while the men’s team edged past the Cape Breton Capers with a close 66-59 victory. The men’s team, defending AUS champions, is set to face the top-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men in a semifinal match scheduled for 15:00, while the women will compete against the second-seeded Acadia Axewomen at 18:30.
Men’s Hockey Highlights
At the MacLauchlan Arena on UPEI’s campus, the men’s team showcased a strong performance. Brett Bressette continued his scoring streak, following a two-goal effort in Game 1 with another two goals in Game 2. The Panthers’ goaltender, Jakob Robillard, was pivotal in their victory, stopping 40 of 42 shots on goal, including 15 of 16 in the decisive third period.
Special teams played a crucial role as well, with UPEI converting 2-for-3 on power plays and successfully killing all three penalties against them. The turning point came when Donovan Arsenault scored a power-play goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the second period, giving the Panthers a crucial 3-1 lead. Despite a late surge from the Huskies, who pulled within one goal with 6:07 left in the third, UPEI maintained their composure to secure the win.
Women’s Hockey Performance
In the women’s quarter-final match at the Dauphinee Centre, the Panthers faced intense competition. Kierra St. Peter netted the series-clinching goal at 1:12 of the third overtime, leading to a jubilant celebration on the ice. Jessica Mercer and Clara Williams assisted on the game-winner, while Erin Cabaday delivered a standout performance in goal, stopping 37 of 39 shots.
The Panthers had earlier tied the game at 2-2 when Chloe McCabe scored a power-play goal late in the third period. With the Panthers achieving 30 shots on Saint Mary’s goaltender Ridleigh Hansen, they managed to overcome a competitive effort from the Huskies, who had strong contributions from Jillian Duggan and Gillan Lapierre.
In other playoff action, the St. Thomas Tommies defeated the Moncton Blue Eagles 2-1 in triple overtime, completing a sweep of their quarter-final series. The Panthers will now face the first-place St. Francis Xavier X-Women in a best-of-five semifinal series, while the Tommies will take on the second-place UNB Reds.
Basketball Successes
In men’s basketball, the fifth-seeded Panthers secured a significant victory against Cape Breton, who had previously won three of four regular-season matchups against UPEI. A strong first quarter, highlighted by a 16-3 run, propelled the Panthers to a 30-21 lead by the end of the first quarter. UPEI maintained their advantage, leading 44-31 at halftime, with Kyree Thompson leading the scoring with 22 points.
In the women’s basketball quarter-finals, Grace Lancaster emerged as the top scorer for UPEI with 15 points, supported by Devon Lawlor and Regan Cornford, who each contributed 12 points. The Panthers controlled the game from the outset, taking a 21-13 lead in the first quarter and never relinquishing it. Lancaster’s recognition as an AUS first-team all-star underscores her contributions to the team.
As the UPEI Panthers gear up for the next rounds of the playoffs, their momentum from these victories will be crucial in their pursuit of championship titles across both basketball and hockey.
