Peter Lougheed Centre ER Expansion Enhances Patient Care

The Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary has officially opened the second phase of its emergency department expansion, completing a significant redevelopment project that began six years ago. This expansion, which cost $151 million, aims to address the increasing demand for emergency services at one of the city’s busiest hospitals.

Originally designed to accommodate approximately 40,000 emergency visits annually, the Peter Lougheed Centre reported over 80,000 visits last year. This surge has put considerable strain on hospital staff and facilities. The latest phase introduces 97 new patient beds, including 28 dedicated emergency department beds, aimed at improving patient flow and care.

Improved Infrastructure and Care Delivery

“Opening this expanded space is the result of extensive teamwork and dedication,” said Maria Vera, patient care manager at the Peter Lougheed Centre. The first phase launched in 2023, and during the construction of the second phase, the hospital utilized a temporary tent structure to manage overflow patients.

Vera emphasized the importance of providing care in a suitable environment, stating, “When we’re able to provide emergency care in the right type of space, it allows us to create and generate that much more flow.” With the new design, the hospital expects to offer more efficient and high-quality care.

The redesigned emergency department features a colour-coded layout with four distinct zones, additional sub-waiting areas for better triage, two isolation rooms for potentially contagious patients, and updated medical equipment to enhance the overall care experience.

Focus on Efficiency and Patient Experience

Hospital leaders believe that while the expansion may not dramatically increase capacity, the improved layout will enable a more efficient patient journey through the system. Nicholas Thain, senior operating officer at the Peter Lougheed Centre, highlighted the design’s emphasis on movement. “Wide hallways and open spaces allow for effective and efficient movement of stretchers, staff, and equipment,” he explained.

“This means a better care space for patients and for the healthcare practitioners working here,” Thain added. The expansion is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to serve the community effectively, addressing the critical need for quality emergency services.

Despite the improvements, the opening of the new ER comes at a time when the hospital faces scrutiny regarding wait times. The management will closely monitor whether the enhanced flow leads to shorter wait times for patients in the coming weeks and months. The focus remains on delivering timely and effective care to those in need.
