Richmond RCMP has announced that applications are now open for the 2026 Youth Academy, an immersive six-day program aimed at students in Grades 10 to 12 who are interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement or related fields. Scheduled to take place from August 10 to 15, 2026, at a local secondary school in Richmond, this initiative offers a unique opportunity for young individuals to gain hands-on experience and insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of police officers.

Participants in the Youth Academy will engage in a range of activities designed to enhance their understanding of police duties and the criminal justice system in Canada. The program includes developing skills in teamwork, public speaking, and self-discipline, alongside physical fitness drills, tactical training, and scenario-based exercises. Students will also receive mentorship from active police officers, facilitating a direct connection between youth and law enforcement professionals.

Program Structure and Objectives

The Richmond RCMP Youth Academy will be conducted by various specialized units within the RCMP. Participants will work with specialized police instructors, fitness coordinators, and members of the Police Dog Services, Forensic Identification, and Emergency Response teams. Under the guidance of Richmond RCMP officers, students will learn valuable life skills such as self-confidence, discipline, and respect, while also gaining insight into potential careers in law enforcement.

According to Constable Das Dhillon, the program’s lead and a Richmond RCMP Youth Liaison Officer, “The Youth Academy is an amazing opportunity for students to connect directly with officers and develop some of these skills early on.” Dhillon highlighted the success of previous graduates, noting that some have gone on to volunteer with the Richmond RCMP or are in the process of applying to join the force as officers.

Application Details and Financial Assistance

Interested students can obtain an application package through their school’s Career Information Advisor, online via the Richmond School District website, or by contacting [email protected]. The application deadline is set for April 7, 2026, at 16:00. Given the competitive nature of the program, successful candidates will undergo a selection process that includes a background check, fitness assessment, and interview.

The cost to attend the Youth Academy is $200, which covers meals, uniforms, and training materials. Financial assistance is available for students who demonstrate a need, ensuring that the program remains accessible to all interested participants.

The Richmond RCMP Youth Academy, developed in 2022 by two School Liaison Officers, has been hosted annually by the Richmond RCMP Youth Section. This initiative is supported by Richmond RCMP officers, employees, volunteers, the Richmond School District, and the City of Richmond.
