More than 1,200 students from Renfrew County engaged with the world of skilled trades this week during the Trades Promoting Trades initiative, hosted by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) at the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus. This event marked the first time OPG organized such a showcase in the Ottawa Valley, providing students in Grades 7 through 12 with valuable insights into various career paths within the energy sector and beyond.

Jennifer Gardiner, stakeholder relations representative at OPG, explained the initiative’s origins: “This is an opportunity to bring youth in to get a taste of various trades.” Previously held in multiple Ontario communities, the event aims to introduce young people to careers they might not otherwise consider. Students participated in hands-on activities, including welding simulations, rope and diving demonstrations, and scaffolding setups, while also trying on personal protective equipment under supervision.

Fostering Connections and Career Awareness

The event’s success can be attributed to the strong partnership between Algonquin College and local school boards. Jodi Bucholtz, manager of community and student affairs at the Pembroke campus, expressed gratitude for hosting the event: “Experiential learning is our bread and butter, and so to have us as the host site for an event like this just seemed like a match made in heaven.”

Organizers anticipated approximately 1,500 participants over the three-day event, which included not only students but also college learners and community members. Bucholtz clarified that the showcase was not intended as a recruitment drive for Algonquin College. “This really is about how colleges play a role in educating students in the trades,” she stated.

In addition to OPG staff, around 15 partner companies and contractors shared their expertise across a broad range of skilled occupations. This collaboration highlighted the diverse career opportunities available to students.

Encouraging Early Exploration of Trade Careers

For students who are inspired by their experiences, educators emphasize the importance of early exploration of available programs. Bucholtz advised students interested in trades to connect with their guidance counsellors. “There are different pathways — certifications at a college, university programs depending on the trade, or the apprenticeship route where you actually get paid to learn.”

OPG representatives showcased a variety of careers within their organization, including positions for millwrights, electricians, welders, pipefitters, engineers, and environmental technicians. The initiative, which began several years ago at OPG’s Lennox Generating Station, has expanded significantly since its inception, allowing the company to give back to the communities where it operates.

Education leaders believe that exposing students to skilled trades at a younger age is crucial for informed decision-making later in high school. Kristen Niemi, director of education with the Renfrew County District School Board, noted that over 1,200 students attended the event, emphasizing its significance. “We’re focused on the intermediate division — about Grades 7 to 9 — and getting them excited and aware of what the trades have to offer them.”

The goal is to cultivate awareness before students begin selecting high school courses that lead to programs such as Specialist High Skills Majors, dual credits, or apprenticeship training. Niemi pointed out that feedback from the community showed a desire for earlier exposure to trades in education.

The culmination of multiple partnerships, including the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board and French-language boards, contributed to the event’s success. “It really is the product of a village coming together with a vision for creating opportunities for youth in Renfrew County,” Niemi concluded.
