Durham School Boards Set September 8 Start for 2026-2027 Year

Students in the Durham region will experience a delayed start to the 2026-2027 school year, with classes commencing on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The decision follows a period of community consultation and has been finalized by various school boards, including the Durham District School Board (DDSB) and the Durham Catholic District School Board.

The scheduling change comes as Labour Day falls on September 7 this year. Several boards considered the possibility of having students return before the holiday but ultimately decided against it. A report presented by DDSB staff at the board meeting on February 18 highlighted the significance of maintaining a traditional school start after Labour Day.

“Starting the school year earlier than September 8 and relocating a September PA Day was also considered but would represent a significant shift from the long-standing schedule,” the report stated. This consideration reflects the potential negative impacts on students engaged in summer employment and families who plan vacations that extend to Labour Day.

The late start also presents challenges in aligning professional activity (PA) days with religious observances. Jim Markovski, associate director of equitable education for the DDSB, noted during the meeting that past efforts have been made to schedule PA days around significant dates. “Because we start late next year, and because of the requirement for a PA day in October for the elections, there was limited opportunity to provide that opportunity for 2026/2027,” he explained.

Despite these challenges, the school boards remain committed to exploring options for future academic calendars. The proposed calendars for the upcoming school year have been submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval.

The following key dates have been established for the 2026-2027 school year for the relevant school boards:

– **Start of classes**: September 8, 2026
– **Labour Day**: September 7, 2026
– **PA Days**: Specific dates to be confirmed following Ministry approval

As these school boards move forward with their plans, the emphasis remains on addressing the needs of students, families, and staff while adhering to community feedback and educational standards.
