As planning intensifies for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year, officials at Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 are prioritizing support for bilingual learners. During a recent board meeting, the education board discussed staffing needs across the district’s seven schools, with a specific focus on the need for a transitional bilingual education teacher at Minooka Jr. High School (MJHS).

During the board’s February 23, 2024, meeting, Sarah Massey, the director of human resources, highlighted the importance of addressing both student enrollment projections and the unique support requirements of special education students. The proposed position aims to aid the native Spanish-speaking population at MJHS, which currently has over 20 students requiring specialized instruction.

Massey emphasized the urgency of filling this role, stating, “There are certain points that trigger when you need to increase your supports for students, and we have that situation developing at Minooka Jr. High School.” The district previously sought a bilingual education teacher for the current academic year but encountered difficulties in filling the position. “We wanted to get a jump start on this one because it is such a hard-to-fill position,” she noted.

While a formal vote on hiring was not conducted, the board expressed conceptual support for pursuing candidates. Board member Stephen Blount commended the efforts, stating, “Continuing our efforts and taking care of the kids — it’s great, so thank you for doing what you’re doing.”

Strategic Planning and Community Engagement

In addition to staffing discussions, the Minooka 201 board is advancing a strategic planning initiative aimed at garnering community feedback on curricular priorities and program opportunities. The district is in the early stages of this process, which includes stakeholder input sessions scheduled for March 18 from 17:00 to 20:00 and March 21 from 09:00 to 12:00.

Community members are encouraged to participate in a newly launched survey available at min201.org/school-board/strategic-plan. Superintendent Rachel Kinder and Board President Emily Conquest underscored the importance of broad community involvement, with Kinder stating, “We truly do believe it is important to cast this wide net.” Conquest added, “I know the survey fatigue is real, but it really is important information for us as we go through this process.”

Investment in Outdoor Learning Environment

The board also heard from Kinder regarding a generous $60,000 donation from the Jones Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). This funding will facilitate the construction of a new outdoor learning center, which will include a gazebo and seating areas. “We are very grateful to accept this from the Jones PTO and excited for spring to come so we can see that project come to life,” Kinder remarked.

As Minooka District 201 continues to address the needs of its diverse student population, these initiatives reflect a commitment to enhancing educational support and community engagement in the years to come.
