Police Arrest Suspect in Theft from Ontario Cemetery

Provincial police in southwestern Ontario have made an arrest linked to a series of thefts from local cemeteries. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that an officer on patrol at the Waterford Greenwood Cemetery observed a sedan leaving the area on March 12, 2024. The officer later located the vehicle parked on Wellington Street, where they discovered stolen items, including brass fixtures, inside.
A 39-year-old individual from Oxford County was arrested and charged with multiple offenses. These include mischief for damaging property, possession of property obtained by crime valued under $5,000, and theft under $5,000. The police have indicated that thefts targeting brass and bronze items have been reported at various cemeteries in Norfolk County since the previous week. Items targeted include nameplates, screws, and, in one instance, an urn was taken.
Details of the Investigation
The investigation began following reports of thefts from several cemeteries in the region, prompting increased police patrols in those areas. Officers have emphasized the need for community vigilance as they continue to track down those responsible for these thefts.
The OPP has urged anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward. They stress that these acts not only involve the loss of valuable items but also cause emotional distress to families visiting their loved ones’ resting places.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and sanctity of local cemeteries. The police have stated that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action against anyone involved in such criminal activities.
Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activity around cemetery areas, as cooperation with law enforcement can help prevent further incidents. The OPP continues to work diligently to restore peace and security to these important sites of remembrance.
