Residents of Prince Albert and surrounding areas gathered on Saturday to receive the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal at the EA Rawlinson Centre. More than 20 deserving individuals were recognised for their exceptional service to the community during a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, including Randy Hoback, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert.

Hoback initiated the nomination process over a year ago, seeking candidates who exemplified community spirit. The project faced delays due to various events, but Hoback expressed his satisfaction at the ceremony’s completion. “These are people who have been the backbone of our communities,” he stated. “They’ve all been nominated by peers in the community and have achieved success in their careers or volunteer work.”

The nominations began in 2024, with constituents invited to submit names for the recognition. Candidates underwent a thorough evaluation to ensure their contributions were legitimate. “It’s a good chance to say thank you and to acknowledge their hard work,” Hoback added.

Ceremony Highlights and Honourees

Among the honourees was Dr. Lalita Malhotra, a well-respected figure known for her community service. She acknowledged the support she has received throughout her career, crediting friends, family, and colleagues. “Anything you achieve in your life is not done alone,” Malhotra said. “You need everybody’s help to achieve something like this.”

Former Citizen of the Year Marj Bodnarchuk, also an honouree, shared her perspective on receiving accolades. “I really don’t need honours. I just really enjoy engaging with the community in so many ways,” she remarked. Bodnarchuk encouraged others to volunteer, highlighting the positive impact of community involvement. “This crowd today is a shining example of what the world could be if everyone volunteered to do good things.”

The ceremony included a performance by Piper Dave Monette, who piped in the honourees. Emceed by Mitch Holash, the event celebrated the achievements of recipients from various backgrounds, including healthcare, military, and volunteer services.

The list of medal recipients featured notable individuals such as Keith Amyotte, Ramsey Bellisle, and Doug Chisholm. Family members accepted the award on behalf of those unable to attend, including Fred Bradshaw and Jamie Petrie.

Significance of the Honour

The King Charles III Coronation Medal was established to commemorate the coronation of King Charles on May 6, 2023. The medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities, provinces, and the nation.

Hoback highlighted the importance of the event, noting it was the largest presentation of such medals in the region. “It’s a nice way to say thank you,” he said. “They make our community stronger, and we just appreciate it.”

With a rich history of community service, the individuals recognised during the ceremony exemplify the spirit of volunteerism that continues to thrive in Prince Albert and beyond. This event not only celebrates their past achievements but also inspires future generations to contribute to their communities.
