Missing Swans Spark Search Efforts in Stratford, Ontario
Residents of Stratford, Ontario, are being urged to assist in the search for five missing swans that have disappeared from Lake Victoria. This unusual situation began two weeks ago when Quin Malott, the parks and forestry manager, discovered that three of the six swans he typically feeds were unaccounted for during his daily routine. Upon returning the next day, he found that all six swans were gone, leaving no clues behind.
Malott initially thought the birds may have relocated to another area, possibly near the local golf course. However, days of searching along the river and checking stormwater retention ponds yielded no results. “It’s concerning for a lot of people,” Malott stated. The swans are an integral part of the city’s charm and are closely linked to its renowned theatre festival, contributing to the local park system’s appeal.
Currently, the flock consists of 18 swans, and the absence of the five has raised alarms among residents. Although there is no concrete evidence to suggest foul play, the swans’ familiarity with human interaction may have made them vulnerable. “They’ve become accustomed to being fed by people. We would just have to shake a can of corn, and they would all come to somebody,” Malott explained, indicating that the possibility of them being taken cannot be dismissed.
As the search continues, Malott noted that the birds could still be nearby, possibly hiding in areas with reduced visibility due to tall grass and other obstructions. “It just seems strange that we don’t have any sign of them,” he remarked. Another consideration is that the birds’ wings may not have been altered to prevent flight, allowing them to escape.
Earlier this week, several residents reported spotting one of the missing swans trapped in a stormwater retention pond in the city’s northern section. Plans are in motion to rescue this bird on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Malott shared that they are taking care to feed the swan to build its trust before attempting to capture it. “It’s a bit timid right now, so we’re going to feed it up for a few days so we can get close enough to catch it,” he said.
The search for the missing birds has not only sparked concern among residents but has also highlighted the community’s attachment to these graceful creatures. Malott remains hopeful that public awareness will aid in the safe return of the missing swans. With no tracking devices used on the birds, the city’s reliance on its community is more crucial than ever.
