Google Chrome Unveils Material 3 Expressive Redesign for Android

Google has rolled out its new Android design, Material 3 Expressive, to the Chrome app for Android. This update follows the initial announcement in May 2023 and subsequent implementations across various first-party applications, including Gmail, Keep, and Contacts.
Updates to the Chrome Interface
The redesign introduces several notable changes to the Chrome interface on Android. A preview of Material 3 Expressive was initially available in the Chrome Canary build back in June. As reported by 9to5Google, the latest version is now being observed in the Chrome app running on Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1.
While the overall layout of the Omnibox, where users enter URLs, remains unchanged, a significant transformation is evident in the progress indicator. The traditional loading bar has been replaced by a split progress indicator with rounder corners, enhancing the browser’s modern aesthetic.
Additionally, the three-dot menu, which provides access to various functions, has been redesigned. When users tap the menu, buttons for actions such as forward, bookmark, download, site info, and refresh are now showcased in large circular boxes. This design aims to improve visibility and ease of access, clearly distinguishing these options from the rest of the menu.
Enhanced Tab Management Features
The Tab Grid page has also received a visual update. The ‘Plus’ button for creating a new tab is now encased in a rounded square box, while a new Incognito icon has been added, displayed alongside total tabs and tab groups within a rectangular container. This update offers users a more intuitive navigation experience.
For users who utilize Tab Groups, the redesign introduces a new feature whereby the frame of an unselected group reflects the color chosen by the user. Previously, the entire tab group was displayed in a single solid color, limiting customization options.
The changes associated with the Material 3 Expressive update are currently available in version 139 on Pixel 10 devices as well as in the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1. Although the rollout does not appear to be widespread at this moment, many users can expect to see the new design in the near future.
As Google continues to enhance user experience across its applications, this latest update to Chrome for Android aligns with the company’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its software interface.
