Community Rallies for Surrey Firefighters’ Nutritional Program

A community event aimed at supporting the Surrey Firefighters Nutritional Snack Program is set to take place on September 6, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the parking lot of #100-15288 54A Ave. This gathering will be hosted near the intersection of Highway 10 and 152 Street, adjacent to Restore Rehab and Wellness and Ora Fitness and Yoga.
The event promises a day filled with family-friendly activities including by-donation fitness classes, mini massages, games, and food options from a Shameless Buns food truck. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet players from the Surrey Knights, a junior hockey team whose season is set to commence shortly.
As of now, the initiative has successfully raised $7,000 towards its goal of $10,000. This fundraising effort has been bolstered by a significant initial contribution from the Forster Group of Companies. According to Coral Henshaw, who is involved in business development for both Ora and Restore, the need for this program has never been more critical.
In her capacity as a volunteer board member for the SurreyCares Community Foundation, Henshaw highlighted the troubling reality of food insecurity in the region. “For many children in our community, the snack they receive at school may be the only food they get all day,” she stated. Henshaw emphasized the importance of this program in ensuring that children remain nourished and ready to learn, particularly as food insecurity continues to impact families across Surrey.
As the Knights prepare for their season opener in North Surrey, they have announced a partnership with Restore and Ora. This collaboration is expected to provide team players with the highest level of care and support, both during the season and in their off-time, further enhancing their performance and well-being.
The upcoming event represents a significant opportunity for community engagement while addressing a pressing social issue. Participants are encouraged to join in and support the nutritional needs of children in Surrey.
