Students Begin New School Year at Maddaugh Elementary in Surrey

Students and parents gathered at Maddaugh Elementary School in Clayton Heights on September 2, 2025, to commence the new school year. The day began with an unusual schedule, featuring a start time of 10 a.m. and a brief end at 11 a.m., marking a one-hour school day designed to help students from Grade 1 through Grade 7 ease into the academic year.

Lisa Beare, the Minister of Education and Child Care, issued a press release highlighting the excitement surrounding the first day of school across British Columbia. “It is always so exciting on the first day as students and staff walk through the school doors and fill the hallways with excitement, laughter, and anticipation—ready to take on the new learning journey in the year ahead,” Beare stated.

With the opening of additional educational facilities, Beare emphasized the growth and development occurring within the province. “This year, new schools and additions are opening around the province, and many more are being built or upgraded through the Ministry of Infrastructure,” she noted.

Maddaugh Elementary School, which opened its doors in March 2021, serves as a reflection of ongoing efforts to enhance educational environments in the region. The short introductory day provided a gentle transition for students, many of whom are returning to familiar classrooms after a summer break.
