Kelowna Hosts Music for the Mighty to Support Families in Need

On October 3, 2023, Kelowna will host the second annual Music for the Mighty event at the Revelry Food and Music Hub. This charity concert aims to raise $75,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital’s Social Work Fund, providing essential support for families caring for critically ill children.
The Social Work Fund plays a critical role in assisting families navigate the emotional and financial challenges that arise during prolonged hospital stays. Two local mothers, Toni Nicholls and Susan Peters, share personal experiences that underscore the necessity of this fund. Their stories highlight the profound impact of critical illnesses on families.
Personal Stories Highlight Need for Support
Toni Nicholls lost her five-year-old daughter, Rylie, in 2023 after a courageous two-year fight against stage four neuroblastoma. Rylie’s treatment necessitated a stay of over 12 months at the BC Children’s Hospital, which Nicholls describes as a second home. Driven by her daughter’s legacy, she is committed to helping other families facing similar hardships.
Susan Peters has a different but equally challenging journey. Her three-year-old daughter, Raven, has been diagnosed with Cockayne Syndrome, a rare and terminal genetic disorder. Peters and her family have made numerous trips to Vancouver for medical care. She emphasizes that the Social Work Fund has been a vital resource, alleviating some of the financial burdens associated with travel and meals, enabling them to focus on supporting their daughter and her three siblings.
Event Details and Community Impact
The upcoming Music for the Mighty event promises an engaging evening filled with live music, food, and a welcoming atmosphere. Tickets can be purchased online, and each ticket includes a welcome drink and food options. The funds raised will directly support families like the Nicholls and Peters, helping them cope with the financial strains of caring for a critically ill child.
As the community rallies together for this event, the importance of shared experiences and support becomes abundantly clear. Both Nicholls and Peters express gratitude for the assistance provided by BC Children’s Hospital and the hope that their stories will inspire others to contribute to this meaningful cause.
Music for the Mighty not only aims to raise funds but also seeks to raise awareness about the struggles faced by families with seriously ill children. The event is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the enduring impact of music in bringing people together for a worthy cause.
