Global Futures Fund Awards Over $2.2 Million to Waterloo Researchers

The Global Futures Fund has allocated more than $2.2 million to support eight interdisciplinary research projects at the University of Waterloo. This funding initiative aligns with the university’s strategic vision, known as Waterloo at 100, aimed at addressing the pressing challenges facing humanity and the planet.

Launched by the Global Futures Office, the fund seeks to encourage collaborative projects that span faculties and disciplines. A total of 63 initial submissions were received, with 15 full proposals moving forward for evaluation. After a thorough multi-stage selection process, the eight projects chosen exemplify the university’s commitment to addressing critical issues such as housing, climate change, gender justice, and cybersecurity.

Funded Projects and Their Impact

Among the initiatives funded, several have outlined specific goals and community impacts. The project titled “Build Now Waterloo Region,” led by Dr. Leia Minaker, has received $350,000 over three years. This initiative will serve as a living lab within North America’s largest affordable homeownership project, aiming to develop sustainable housing solutions. Engaging students in various capacities, the project collaborates with the European Network of Living Labs to enhance educational opportunities.

Another project, “Exploring the Future of Transportation,” led by Dr. Suzanne Kearns, is focused on advancing sustainable transport systems. With funding of $375,000 over three years, the project promotes interdisciplinary research and community engagement through a Sustainable Transportation Summit.

A third initiative, “Integrating Technology, Social Infrastructure, Ethics, and Education,” led by Dr. Edith Law, aims to create a multidisciplinary institute focused on the implications of AI and automation in the workplace. This project, funded with $450,000, will address ethical considerations and promote inclusive working environments.

In an effort to bolster climate resilience, Dr. Sarah Burch will lead the project “Building Canada’s Capacity to Address Climate Change,” which has received $350,000. This initiative includes professional training and a new certificate program designed to enhance infrastructure and policy innovation across various sectors.

Other notable projects include “Creating Canada’s Largest Capstone Ecosystem,” led by Dr. Derek Rayside, which has been awarded $294,000. This initiative aims to connect students with real-world partners to tackle Global Futures challenges while building sustainable revenue models.

The SIGNAL Network, focusing on strategies for intersectional gender justice, is led by Dr. Brianna Wiens with funding of $100,000 for one year. This project aims to develop policy briefs and educational tools that advocate for equity and liberation.

Additionally, “Indigenous Futures Circle,” led by Dr. John Lewis, has been allocated $138,338 to support culturally grounded solutions through collaboration with Indigenous communities. Lastly, the “Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute,” led by Dr. N. Asokan, will receive $200,000 to advance information security and privacy through education and industry partnerships.
