The chief executive officer of the Blood Tribe Department of Health, Derrick Fox, will step down from his position at the end of the month. The announcement was made by the department’s board of directors on Monday, marking the end of Fox’s notable 28-year tenure with the organization, including the last five years as CEO.

In his statement, Fox expressed a desire to devote more time to his family. He reflected on his years with the department, acknowledging both the challenges and accomplishments encountered along the way. “It’s been a wonderful experience,” he told members of the media. “As we know, it has come with stresses and traumas at times, but many positives, too, and I look at the work that’s being done by the team here and it’s just so strong.”

Impactful Leadership and Contributions

During his time as CEO, Fox led the Blood Tribe Department of Health through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He was instrumental in the expansion of the Bringing the Spirits Home detox program and played a key role in the department’s takeover of the Lethbridge homeless shelter. Under his leadership, the department focused on community health initiatives that made a lasting impact on residents.

Marcel Weasel Head, chairman of the department’s board, praised Fox’s leadership style, stating, “He has always led from the heart.” Weasel Head emphasized the importance of Fox’s approachable demeanor and steady guidance, noting that his contributions would leave a lasting legacy within the organization and the broader community. “While we will miss his leadership, we support his decision to place family first and wish him the very best in this new chapter,” he added.

Transitioning Leadership

As Fox prepares to depart, Kash Shade, the chief operating officer, will assume the role of interim CEO starting on October 1, 2023. The leadership team will begin the search for a permanent replacement as they navigate this transition.

The Blood Tribe Department of Health has a long-standing commitment to enhancing the well-being of its community members. Fox’s departure marks a significant moment for the department, as it looks to build upon the foundation he established over nearly three decades.

As the organization moves forward, the focus will remain on continuing the vital work that supports the health and wellness of the community, ensuring that the initiatives Fox championed will carry on under new leadership.
