Activist Flotilla Attacked Again in Tunisia While Aiming for Gaza

An international activist flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, reported an attack for the second consecutive night while docked in Tunisian waters. The incident occurred on September 27, 2023, when the British-flagged vessel, Alma, was targeted by a drone, resulting in projectiles igniting a fire on board. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the crew.
The group released security footage depicting the crew members shouting “fire” while pointing towards the sky as flaming projectiles fell onto the deck. This attack followed a similar incident the previous evening involving another vessel, the Portuguese-flagged Family. Tunisian authorities have denied claims that drones were responsible for the earlier attack, stating they are currently investigating the situation. There has been no immediate response regarding the latest incident.
Flotilla’s Mission and Background
The flotilla, consisting of approximately 20 boats, departed from Barcelona, Spain, on September 1, 2023. Its mission is to deliver a symbolic amount of humanitarian aid to Gaza while challenging the ongoing Israeli blockade. The activists planned to make a stop in Tunisia before proceeding to their final destination.
In a statement, the activists asserted that these repeated attacks coincide with what they describe as “intensified Israeli aggression on Palestinians in Gaza.” They characterized the strikes as part of an orchestrated effort to disrupt their mission. Despite the challenges, the flotilla remains resolute in its objectives, declaring, “The Global Sumud Flotilla continues undeterred.”
Ongoing Conflict and International Response
As the flotilla navigates these hostile waters, the broader context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to escalate. The activists’ claims about the attacks highlight the tensions surrounding humanitarian efforts in the region. While Tunisian authorities are investigating the incidents, there has been no immediate reaction from Israeli officials.
The situation underscores the complexities and dangers faced by those striving to provide assistance in conflict zones. The Global Sumud Flotilla’s determination reflects a broader movement advocating for increased humanitarian access to Gaza, amid ongoing geopolitical strife. As the flotilla prepares to move forward, its members remain committed to their cause, undeterred by the challenges they face.
