JB Owen and Peter Giesin have successfully arrived in Whitehorse, Yukon, as part of their ambitious tandem cycling journey spanning 9,100 kilometres. The trip commenced in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and will conclude in Homer, Alaska, with the couple dedicated to raising funds for classrooms in underserved communities.

Their experience in the Yukon has been particularly memorable for the duo. Owen remarked, “We’ve had the most spectacular sunsets the last three nights.” The founder of Ignite Publishing highlighted the warmth and generosity of the local community, noting that residents have provided assistance, directions, and even accommodations. “Humanity is so giving and supportive; we’ve had so many people help us and offer us things,” Owen added.

Memorable Encounters and Challenges

During their journey, Owen and Giesin visited stunning locations, including Swan Haven and Atlin Lake, which Owen described as “spellbinding.” They also revisited Lumel Studios, where they previously enjoyed blowing glass. Luann Baker-Johnson, the studio owner, graciously offered them the key to her cabin near McClintock Bay, allowing them to spend a beautiful day there with their daughters.

The couple’s journey has not been without its challenges. While cycling near Kitwanga, British Columbia, they encountered a mother grizzly bear with two cubs. Owen recounted the tense moment: “There was a grizzly in the ditch with her two cubs. We were super quiet and she was super quiet, so we didn’t see each other at first. Then, out of nowhere, she came running out of the ditch and started chasing.” Thankfully, both cyclists managed to outrun the bear.

Initially, they planned to enter Alaska via the Top of the World Highway, but a recent road washout necessitated a detour along the Alaska Highway. Owen and Giesin anticipate reaching Homer within the next two weeks, where they plan to celebrate their journey with rest and reflection. Owen expressed their excitement, stating, “We’re going to spend a week in Alaska, just enjoying it.”

A Mission Beyond Cycling

The couple’s adventure serves a larger purpose as they aim to set a world record for elevation gain on a tandem bicycle, targeting a total of 93,000 metres during their journey. Since starting long-distance cycling in 2020, Owen and Giesin have covered over 30,000 kilometres across North America.

Their mission focuses on funding solar-powered, modular learning spaces for children in regions with limited access to education. According to their website, they have successfully opened two schools in Lombok, Indonesia, and are working to fund two more in South Africa and Uganda. Owen emphasized the importance of education, stating, “We want kids to learn to read, write, innovate and be creative. That’s how we build a better humanity.”

Despite encountering mechanical issues, flat tires, and the bear encounter, both cyclists reflect positively on their time in the Yukon. Giesin noted, “It’s one of those places that captures your heart every time you come.” Their journey not only highlights the spirit of adventure but also underscores the necessity of supporting education in underserved communities worldwide.
