Bishop McNamara Celebrates First Responders at Gratitude Drive-Thru

Students from Bishop McNamara Catholic Schools came together on September 11, 2023, to express their appreciation for local first responders, veterans, and active-duty service members through a Gratitude Drive-Thru. This initiative, marking its 10th year, aimed to honor those who serve the community while reflecting on the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

During the morning announcements, the students prayed for first responders before heading to the parking lots, where they served coffee and donuts. The event also featured hand-made thank you cards and American flags crafted by kindergarten pupils. According to Dana Berg, principal at the Bradley site, the focus was on celebrating the “good people” who stepped up during a time of crisis, rather than dwelling on the tragedy itself.

“This age group doesn’t know so much about what happened. They just know our country is different because of September 11, 2001,” Berg explained. She emphasized the importance of instilling in students an understanding that first responders are friends who are there to help them.

One of the many local police officers who participated was Lt. Robert Mason, who expressed his admiration for the students’ grasp of the event. “It’s amazing to see the young kids that are doing this and how they’re promoting their community and first responders,” Mason remarked. His interaction with the sixth-grade student council members, who greeted attendees with high fives and smiles, highlighted the positive engagement of the youth.

For Ellie Jamros, the student council vice president, the experience was particularly meaningful. “My favorite part was being able to offer something back to the officers and other first responders for all the work they do for us,” she stated. Jamros hoped that the first responders felt appreciated for their service.

At the Kankakee site, a Mass of Gratitude was organized to honor local veterans and first responders. Kaelyn Bess, principal of the Kankakee site, addressed the attendees, expressing deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by these dedicated individuals. “This Thursday marks 24 years since the tragic events that profoundly impacted our nation and forever changed the lives of Americans,” Bess noted.

She reflected on the unity displayed in the aftermath of the attacks, stating, “On that day, and in the years that followed, our first responders and service members demonstrated extraordinary heroism and bravery.” The event served as a reminder not only of the past but also of the ongoing commitment to honor those who protect and serve the community.
