Langley’s 40 Avenue Set to Reopen to Traffic by October 10

The Township of Langley has announced that 40 Avenue is expected to reopen to traffic by October 10, 2023, following significant repairs to a damaged culvert. The road, located in the 21400 block of 40 Avenue, has been closed since October 19, 2022, when severe weather caused by an atmospheric river led to extensive damage.

The culvert, originally composed of two corrugated metal pipes, was overwhelmed by heavy rainfall that filled Murray Creek, leading to its destruction. Since the collapse, drivers traveling between Brookswood and south Murrayville have faced detours, as the road closure forced them to navigate around the affected area.

Restoration efforts faced delays due to environmental regulations. In British Columbia, there is a limited timeframe, known as the fisheries window, during which construction work can occur in fish-bearing waters to protect local wildlife, specifically salmon habitats. This window opened earlier this summer, allowing the Township to proceed with the necessary repairs.

The Township has successfully replaced the old culvert with two modern concrete box culverts, which are designed to last approximately 75 years. This upgrade not only enhances the structural integrity of the road but also alleviates the potential for future flooding issues.

In addition to the culvert replacement, the construction project required the careful management of a major water main pipe that runs along the road. With the new culverts and infrastructure now in place, the final phase involves rebuilding the surface of the road itself.

As Langley Township prepares for the reopening, local officials express optimism that this infrastructure improvement will significantly enhance traffic flow and safety in the area. The community eagerly awaits the full restoration of access along 40 Avenue, which has been a crucial route for many residents.
