Kelowna Radio Host Phil Johnson Steps Back After 55 Years

A well-known voice in Kelowna is set to transition from his long-standing role on the airwaves. On September 12, 2023, radio station AM1150 announced that morning show host Phil Johnson, aged 76, will step down from his position after more than two decades. This decision marks a significant moment in his distinguished career, which has spanned over 55 years in broadcasting.
In an official press release, AM1150 expressed gratitude for Johnson’s extensive contributions, stating, “After an incredible 55-year career in broadcasting, Phil has decided it’s time to begin a new chapter.” Despite stepping away from the morning show, Johnson will not retire entirely. He will continue to work with AM1150, contributing to a new weekly program as well as providing commentaries and special features.
Community Impact and Future Plans
Ken Kilcullen, the vice president of talent and regional manager at AM1150, praised Johnson’s influence, saying, “Phil’s impact in our community goes well beyond the airwaves.” Kilcullen added that the station is pleased to have Johnson remain part of the team, reinforcing his importance to both the organization and the local community.
Johnson’s final morning show will air on October 3, 2023. His departure from the morning slot marks the end of an era for AM1150 and its listeners. For many, Johnson has been the voice that shaped their mornings, providing news, entertainment, and a sense of connection to the community.
As he prepares for this new chapter, Johnson’s ongoing involvement with AM1150 ensures that he will continue to engage with his audience, albeit in a different capacity. His legacy in Kelowna’s broadcasting landscape remains firmly established, and his future contributions are highly anticipated.
