Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Surpasses 4.4 Million Sales Milestone

The video game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has achieved remarkable success, surpassing 4.4 million copies sold worldwide. Developed by the Montpellier-based studio Sandfall, which was founded by former Ubisoft developers, this French role-playing game (RPG) has not only exceeded sales expectations but has also earned critical acclaim as one of the standout releases of 2025.
In a recent interview with French media outlet Clips du Lundi, two members of Sandfall revealed that the game’s actual sales figures have outstripped those reported by its publisher, Kepler Interactive, which noted 3.3 million copies sold. The figures disclose that Clair Obscur sold an impressive three million copies within its first 33 days on the market and subsequently added another 1.4 million in the following 109 days. This performance stands out, particularly in a year when the global gaming industry has faced challenges such as inflation and declining sales.
The game’s success is even more remarkable considering its modest budget of under 50 million EUR and its competitive launch price. Critics have lauded Sandfall’s craftsmanship, highlighting that the game’s level of polish rivals, and in some cases exceeds, that of more expensive AAA productions. This effective combination of resource management, artistic vision, and strategic pricing has transformed Clair Obscur into both a financial success and a cultural phenomenon.
Looking ahead, the focus for Kepler Interactive is whether Clair Obscur can break the five million mark in sales before the end of the year. Regardless of the final figure, the success of Sandfall has demonstrated that passion and thoughtful design can compete with larger industry players, reshaping expectations for mid-budget RPGs.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 serves as a testament to the potential of innovative development and strategic market positioning.
