Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed an executive order on September 15, 2023, aimed at ensuring residents have access to necessary vaccines ahead of the upcoming fall respiratory virus season. This initiative, termed the Statewide Vaccine Access Initiative, will be led by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

The executive order comes in response to recent shifts in vaccine policies by federal health agencies. Pritzker specifically criticized the actions of U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., describing them as “volatile and concerning.” He emphasized the importance of state-level intervention: “When the federal government abandons its responsibility, Illinois will step up,” Pritzker stated. He reinforced the commitment to “follow the science” and prioritize the health needs of families across the state.

The order empowers the IDPH to issue a Standing Order, allowing eligible providers—including pharmacies and clinical settings—to administer vaccines recommended by the department after consulting with its expert Immunization Advisory Committee. This directive specifically covers access to flu shots and COVID-19 boosters.

The IDPH is set to convene the Immunization Advisory Committee on September 22, 2023. By the end of that week, the committee is expected to provide guidance to healthcare providers and assist residents in making informed immunization choices.

IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra emphasized the importance of reliable information in light of the “confusing and conflicting guidelines” from federal authorities. “The executive order ensures Illinois residents have the credible, transparent, and science-based guidance they need to make vaccine decisions for themselves and their family,” Vohra remarked. He also noted the department’s collaboration with various partners, including pharmacies, schools, and rural clinics, to maximize access to essential vaccines.

In a show of support for the governor’s initiative, leaders from multiple statewide medical organizations characterized the executive order as a “life-saving” measure. They expressed optimism that this proactive approach will help mitigate health risks associated with respiratory viruses this fall.

As the initiative unfolds, Illinois aims to provide its residents with the necessary tools and resources to safeguard their health during a season that often sees a rise in respiratory illnesses.
