Fire Engulfs Apartment Building, Evacuations Ordered in Middle Sackville

A significant fire broke out in a four-storey apartment building in Middle Sackville early on the morning of March 4, 2024, prompting evacuations in the surrounding area. Fire crews from Halifax received the emergency call just after midnight, and by 5 a.m., the blaze was still actively burning.

According to Brad Connors, District Chief of Halifax Fire, the fire has engulfed the entire structure. “It’s contained to the one building, and the whole building is basically on fire,” Connors stated. He noted that all four floors have been affected, impacting all units within the building.

In response to the fire, the municipality ordered evacuations for several homes near the affected apartment complex. Residents at civic addresses ranging from 25 to 119 on Hanwell Drive were instructed to leave their homes due to the potential danger posed by the fire.

Connors explained the rationale behind the evacuations, stating, “Just due to the houses located behind the structure and the amount of fire.” Fire crews have established protective lines to safeguard nearby homes from falling embers.

As of the latest updates, no injuries have been reported related to the incident. Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene for most of the day to manage the ongoing situation and ensure the safety of the surrounding community.
