Eight Injured in Minneapolis Shootings at Homeless Camp and Transit Station

A shooting in Minneapolis has left eight people injured, four of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred late on Monday night at a homeless camp situated on private property. This shooting took place just hours after another shooting nearby a transit station, which resulted in five injuries. Both events have raised concerns among city officials regarding the rising levels of violence in the area.
The first shooting happened around 19:00 on Monday near a transit station, where five individuals suffered injuries. Hours later, police received reports of gunfire coming from the encampment around 22:00. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, an off-duty officer working at a nearby retail store was alerted by people fleeing the camp. Upon responding, the officer encountered gunfire and found five individuals injured, including a woman and two men with life-threatening wounds. Two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries to their legs and were also transported to a hospital.
After the initial assessment at the homeless camp, police learned that three additional victims had arrived at hospitals independently, one of whom is in critical condition. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with either shooting.
In light of these incidents, Chief O’Hara expressed deep concern. “Unfortunately, here we are yet again in the aftermath of a mass shooting,” he stated. “This is not normal.”
Context of Violence in Minneapolis
This surge in violence follows a particularly tumultuous summer for the city. Notable incidents include the tragic assassination of Melissa Hortman, the Minnesota House Speaker, and her husband in their home. Additionally, another state lawmaker and his wife were shot on the same day in June. A mass shooting at a church in late August claimed the lives of two children and injured 21 others.
The homeless camp where the latest shooting occurred has been a focal point of legal disputes between its property owner, Hamoudi Sabri, and city officials. Sabri opened the site to homeless individuals in July, but city authorities have sought to shut it down, citing safety concerns. Sabri has resisted these efforts and faces approximately $15,000 in citations related to the encampment.
Following the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced that the city would move to clear the camp once the crime scene investigation concludes. “This is way worse than just a nuisance. This is a danger to the community,” Frey stated in a news conference.
In response to the city’s actions, Sabri criticized officials for not addressing the underlying issues of violence. He emphasized the need for support services such as grief and trauma counselors, as well as emergency shelter options for those affected by the violence. “Instead, the Mayor’s answer is the same tired move we’ve seen for years: displacement,” Sabri said. He condemned the approach as an illusion of control that fails to resolve the deeper problems facing the community.
The ongoing violence and the city’s response highlight the complex challenges Minneapolis faces in addressing both homelessness and public safety. As the investigation continues, residents remain on edge, calling for solutions that prioritize community safety while addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
