Portage la Prairie Community Raises $2,800 for Cancer Research

Approximately 80 participants gathered at Island Park in Portage la Prairie on September 14, 2023, for the annual Terry Fox Run. This community event raised a total of $2,815 for cancer research, continuing the legacy of the Canadian hero, Terry Fox.
The atmosphere was vibrant as attendees of all ages took part in the run and walk, demonstrating a shared commitment to fighting cancer. Participants embraced the spirit of the event, which honors Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure through perseverance and dedication.
Local organizers expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “We are thrilled with the turnout and the funds raised this year,” said one of the event coordinators. “Every dollar counts in the fight against cancer, and we appreciate everyone who came out to participate.”
The funds will contribute to crucial cancer research initiatives, impacting many lives. The Terry Fox Foundation, established in 1980, has funded more than $800 million in cancer research across Canada, making significant strides in understanding and treating various forms of cancer.
This year’s event not only celebrated Terry Fox’s legacy but also fostered a sense of unity among participants. Many attendees wore custom T-shirts emblazoned with inspirational messages, showcasing their support for cancer patients and survivors.
Community events like the Terry Fox Run play an essential role in raising awareness and funding for cancer research. The participation of local residents illustrates the ongoing commitment to this cause and the impact of collective efforts.
As the event concluded, participants were already expressing enthusiasm for next year’s run, eager to continue the tradition and further support cancer research initiatives. The sense of hope and determination was palpable, reinforcing the idea that together, communities can make a significant difference in the fight against cancer.
