Joliet Public Schools District 86 has finalized a new contract with its teachers’ union, enhancing compensation for educators across the district. The Board of School Inspectors approved the three-year agreement on September 10, 2023, during a scheduled board meeting. This contract, negotiated with Council #86 of the American Federation of Teachers-Local 604, will provide an average wage increase of 12% over the duration of the agreement for the district’s 768 teachers.

The new contract establishes a starting salary of $51,676 for teachers holding a bachelor’s degree and lacking prior experience. This agreement is retroactive to the beginning of the current school year, which commenced in August 2023. The Board expressed confidence that this contract will enhance the district’s ability to attract and retain qualified educators.

Dr. Theresa Rouse, the Superintendent of District 86, commented on the successful negotiation, stating, “I am pleased we successfully reached an agreement on a contract. Our dedicated teachers work tirelessly to ensure our students receive a high-quality education in a safe and caring environment.”

In addition to the new contract, Dr. Rouse has announced plans to conclude her tenure as superintendent when her contract expires in June 2027. Her departure will mark a significant transition for the district, which has faced various challenges in recent years.

The Board of School Inspectors highlighted the importance of this new contract in maintaining a competitive edge in the education sector. As schools across the nation grapple with staffing shortages and budget constraints, attracting and retaining quality teachers is critical for delivering effective education to students.

The agreement represents a pivotal step for Joliet District 86, aiming to enhance educational outcomes through improved teacher compensation and support. Parents, students, and the broader community can expect to see positive changes as the district implements this new contract in the coming years.
