JoeAnna’s House Expands to Support Families at KGH

Families facing medical emergencies often find that their greatest comfort comes from being close to loved ones. Since its inception in 2019, JoeAnna’s House has provided essential support to families traveling to Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) from across the Southern Interior of British Columbia. Due to overwhelming demand, JoeAnna’s House is set to undergo an expansion, significantly increasing its capacity to accommodate families in need.
Currently, JoeAnna’s House boasts only 20 rooms, which has resulted in high occupancy rates and the unfortunate necessity to turn away over 1,000 families each year. Families from locations such as Golden to Osoyoos frequently face long waitlists, forcing them to choose between expensive hotel accommodations or the strain of nighttime commutes along dark roads while their loved ones receive critical care.
The expansion of JoeAnna’s House is not merely about adding more beds; it symbolizes a commitment to community and connection during some of life’s most challenging moments. This initiative has garnered support from several hospital foundations across the Southern Interior, including the KGH Foundation, SOS Medical Foundation, East Kootenay Foundation for Health, Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation, and Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation. Their collective aim is clear: to ensure that every family, regardless of their location within the Kootenays or Okanagan regions, can find a welcoming home at JoeAnna’s House while their loved one receives specialized care at KGH.
Carly Reuter, the director of community engagement at JoeAnna’s House, emphasized the significance of community support in this expansion. “This expansion is possible because of the generosity of communities from every corner of the Southern Interior,” she stated. “Health care knows no borders, and JoeAnna’s House is a true reflection of what can happen when communities unite for a common purpose, keeping families close to care and close to one another.”
For families like Jeannie and Ken Randle from Penticton, JoeAnna’s House transformed from a simple shelter into a vital source of strength and belonging. “It’s the greatest gift I can imagine,” Jeannie expressed. “To be able to be with my husband during such a stressful and emotional time was priceless. I truly believe being at JoeAnna’s House helped his recovery and it gave me a sense of calm I couldn’t have found anywhere else.”
While Ken underwent rehabilitation, Jeannie remained by his side during the day, participating actively in his recovery. In the evenings, she returned to JoeAnna’s House, where she found warmth, connection, and a supportive community. “It’s a lovely home to stay in,” she recalled. “The staff were so caring, always there to listen. And being able to unwind in the evenings, to talk with others going through the same thing, made a world of difference.”
The small yet impactful moments—conversations at the kitchen table, late-night cups of tea, and the ease of walking across the street to be near a loved one—are what elevate JoeAnna’s House to a true home-away-from-home. These experiences remind families that they are not alone during their most difficult times.
The expansion of JoeAnna’s House is crucial for ensuring that more families have access to safe, supportive accommodation close to their loved ones. Each additional room represents a significant step in alleviating the burdens of travel and accommodation costs, which can be particularly stressful during health crises. More importantly, the expansion will facilitate healing, comfort, and vital human connections at a time when they are most needed.
As JoeAnna’s House prepares for this significant growth, the organization invites community members to contribute to the expansion project. Each donation not only helps provide physical space for families but also fosters hope—hope for recovery, hope for community, and hope for families navigating their toughest days.
