Kinistino Student Selected for Saskatchewan Youth Council

A Grade 11 student from Kinistino, Saskatchewan, has been appointed to the provincial Youth Council, where she will help influence the future of education in the region. Hadley Gariepy is one of 12 high school students chosen by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education for the 2025-26 council. This opportunity allows Gariepy to share her ideas and insights with educational leaders throughout the year.
Gariepy has been active in student leadership, participating in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division student council for the past two years and her school’s student council since Grade 6. Her nomination came from Garette Tebay, Superintendent of the Sask Rivers School Division. Expressing her excitement about the role, Gariepy stated, “It’s really exciting, I didn’t think it would happen.”
Engaging in Meaningful Discussions
Throughout her tenure on the Youth Council, Gariepy and her peers will engage in significant discussions with the Ministry of Education. Their focus will include various education-related priorities, such as policies, curriculum, and programs. One issue particularly important to Gariepy is ensuring that schools provide a safe and welcoming environment for all students.
“I just think whether it’s peer-to-peer or student-teacher relationships, that’s a big part of learning,” she emphasized. “Clubs are important, and just feeling safe in your classroom is important.”
The Youth Council, established in 2019, offers a platform for student leaders aged 16 and older to share their unique perspectives and experiences within the education system. For the current selection process, school divisions were encouraged to nominate up to two students. Additionally, independent schools, historical high schools, and the Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre were invited to nominate one student each.
Acknowledging Student Leaders
Education Minister Everett Hindley welcomed the new council members, stating, “I am excited to welcome these outstanding students to the Youth Council. Each of them has embraced the opportunity to be a leader within their schools and communities. Their perspectives are essential in helping shape a more responsive and positive education system for all Saskatchewan students.”
The selection of Gariepy and her peers highlights the importance of student involvement in shaping educational policies that affect their lives. Their insights will play a crucial role in fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere in Saskatchewan classrooms.
