Archaeologists Uncover Ancient Port That May Lead to Cleopatra’s Tomb

Archaeologists have made a significant discovery off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, which may bring them closer to the long-sought tomb of the legendary queen, Cleopatra. The team, led by National Geographic explorer Kathleen Martinez, has unearthed an ancient submerged port near the temple site of Taposiris Magna, a location believed to be linked to Cleopatra’s final resting place.
For centuries, Cleopatra, who ruled from 51 to 30 BCE, has captivated the imaginations of historians and the public alike. Despite numerous attempts, her burial site—rumored to be near the royal palace in Alexandria—has remained elusive. Martinez’s two-decade quest to locate the tomb combines her background in archaeology with her training as a criminal lawyer, allowing her to approach the mystery as if it were a forensic case.
In her documentary, “Cleopatra’s Final Secret,” which premieres on September 25, 2023, Martinez outlines her findings and theories. She posits that Cleopatra, known for her strategic mind, would have orchestrated her own death and burial with meticulous care, possibly utilizing secret tunnels to transport her body to a hidden location.
The temple of Taposiris Magna, located in the town of Borg El Arab, approximately 30 miles west of Alexandria, has long intrigued researchers due to the lack of information about its history and function. Martinez describes her discovery of foundation plates dedicated to the goddess Isis, along with artifacts and coins featuring Cleopatra’s likeness, as compelling evidence of the site’s importance.
Recent excavations have revealed burial shafts, mummies, and a remarkable 4,300-foot tunnel leading toward the Mediterranean Sea. Martinez believes this tunnel may have once connected the temple to the now-submerged port, which has yielded promising artifacts. Underwater explorations have uncovered manmade stone pockets, colossal structures, and anchors, suggesting that Taposiris Magna was once a thriving religious and maritime trading hub.
Famed oceanographer Robert Ballard, known for discovering the wreck of the HMS Titanic, joined Martinez’s team to lend his expertise in underwater exploration. His insights have further validated their search efforts. “We already have archaeological evidence that important trade and commercial activities were taking place in Taposiris Magna,” Martinez stated. “But having this information doesn’t mean that we will make the discovery.”
The logistics of excavation are daunting, with significant sediment accumulation obscuring the structures. However, Martinez intends to begin work on the “Salam 5” feature, which consists of several tall rectangular stone structures believed to be part of the ancient port.
While definitive proof of Cleopatra’s tomb remains to be found, Martinez remains optimistic. “Nobody can tell me that Cleopatra is not at Taposiris Magna,” she asserted. “To say that, you have to excavate the whole area and not find her. I’m not going to stop. For me, it is a matter of time.”
As the search continues, the excitement around Cleopatra’s legacy persists. The discoveries at Taposiris Magna may not only redefine our understanding of her life and death but also continue to inspire fascination with one of history’s most enigmatic figures. The documentary “Cleopatra’s Final Secret” will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the day after its premiere.
