Abbotsford School District Reports 2025-26 Enrolment and Upgrades

The Abbotsford School District presented its 2025-26 school startup report to the board of education on September 23, 2023. The report highlighted several significant trends regarding student enrolment and ongoing initiatives to support educational facilities.

Enrolment figures indicate a slight decline in both elementary and middle school students compared to the budget. Elementary enrolment decreased by eight students, while middle school numbers fell by 41 students. In contrast, secondary enrolment aligns closely with budget forecasts. The district now operates a total of 397 divisions in elementary education, down from 398 the previous year, and maintains 160 divisions in middle schools, unchanged from last year.

Recruitment of qualified teachers remains a challenge. Despite this, the number of continuing enrolment teachers has increased to 196, up from 175 in the previous school year. Additionally, there are 177 temporary teacher positions for the current academic year. The district has filled 373 teacher positions, a notable rise from 310 last year. Conversely, the hiring of Teachers Teaching on Call (TTOC) has decreased from 195 to 170, while the number of uncertified employees filling TTOC roles has increased from 29 to 49.

The report also provided insights into support staff recruitment. A total of 110 internal support positions, 127 casual educational assistants, and 57 other casual staff members have been hired. Last academic year saw 57 support staff resignations and 25 retirements. The district introduced a new Learning Improvement Fund to enhance student support through educational assistants and to provide professional development opportunities.

Technology and Infrastructure Investments

In an effort to modernize educational tools, the district acquired 1,800 new laptops and 200 desktop computers to replace outdated equipment. Upgrades to computer lab software have progressed, with most schools transitioning to Windows 11 by winter break.

Capital projects for the current school year include significant infrastructure improvements. These involve sidewalk restoration at Irene Kelleher Totíltawtxw, an eight-classroom addition at Abbotsford Middle School, and various electrical projects aimed at carbon neutrality at Auguston and Margaret Stenersen elementary schools. Other enhancements include HVAC improvements at Rick Hansen, plumbing upgrades at Margaret Stenersen, and roofing projects at W.J. Mouat and Margaret Stenersen.

The district also reported the relocation of three portables to Bakerview, Yale, and Mouat, along with two portables moving from Auguston to W.A. Fraser. Facilities are receiving upgraded amenities, such as new gym hardwood recoats in several locations and washroom renovations at Godson.

Community Support and Student Resources

The seventh edition of the Back to School Program took place on August 27, 2023, distributing a record 750 backpacks filled with school essentials. This year, the program extended its reach to 200 middle school backpacks, compared to 530 last year. Each participating family received a $25 gift card to Superstore to assist with additional school-related expenses. Community organizations, including Archway Community Services, The Salvation Army, and Tim Hortons, played pivotal roles in supporting this initiative.

Additionally, JD Sports provided 150 winter coats that were distributed to students at multiple schools, ensuring that children are well-equipped for the colder months. The district also received a cash donation from Aggressive Towing to further support its programs.

The next board meeting is scheduled for October 21, 2023, where the newly elected trustee from the upcoming byelection on October 11 will be welcomed. This meeting will provide an opportunity to further discuss the district’s progress and future plans.
