In a commanding performance, the Bradley-Bourbonnais Boilermakers triumphed over the Stagg Chargers with a decisive score of 40-6 during their homecoming game on October 6, 2023. This victory marked their fifth consecutive win of the season, improving their record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southwest Valley Conference Green, securing their place in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

The atmosphere at Bradley-Bourbonnais was electric as players, including senior running back Issac Allison, celebrated their final homecoming game. Upon entering the field, the Boilermakers donned their traditional red jerseys for warm-ups but changed into black for the game, marching past the alumni tent to a crowd that filled the stands to capacity.

The game began with a bang as the Boilermakers scored on their very first offensive play. Quarterback Ellis Johnson delivered a screen pass to junior wide receiver Rontez Smith, who evaded multiple defenders on his way to a remarkable 56-yard touchdown just two minutes into the match. This successful play set the tone for what would become a dominating performance.

Following a swift three-and-out by Stagg (0-5, 0-3), Allison capped off a 72-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. The Chargers struggled to find their footing against the aggressive Boilermakers’ defense, which allowed them only 36 first-half yards. By the end of the first quarter, the score had ballooned to 21-0, with another touchdown from teammate Ky’ren Edmon.

The second quarter saw Johnson connecting with Dachaun Anderson for a 24-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead further. Allison continued to showcase his skills with a 10-yard touchdown run early in the second half, bringing the score to 40-0 before the Chargers finally got on the board with an 8-yard touchdown run by Olaf Kazub.

The Boilermakers displayed a well-rounded performance, with contributions from numerous players. Johnson finished with an impressive 8-of-11 passing for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Both Edmon and Allison recorded two rushing touchdowns, while Smith and Lyzale Edmon excelled as receivers.

Defensively, senior tackle Khalan Clemens led the charge with two sacks and a fumble recovery, highlighting a physical effort from the entire team. Coach Mike Kohl praised the team for their depth and versatility, noting, “I don’t know if I’ve ever coached a team like [this] where we have so many kids that can make plays defensively, offensively and on special teams.”

As the Boilermakers prepare for their upcoming rematch against Lincoln-Way Central, which previously defeated them in both the regular season and the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals last year, they carry a playoff spot in hand. However, their aspirations extend beyond just making the postseason; they aim to secure the conference title, with their next challenge looming on the horizon.

Kohl expressed his excitement for the team’s potential growth, stating, “It’s always a goal of ours to make the playoffs, obviously, and I’m excited to see how these guys can progress throughout the year.” With a strong start to the season, the Boilermakers are eager to build on their momentum as they march toward the postseason.
