Alaska Airlines Restructures Leadership to Enhance Operations

Alaska Air Group has announced significant leadership changes at both Alaska Airlines and its regional subsidiary, Horizon Air. Effective November 3, 2025, Jason Berry will transition to the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Alaska Airlines, while Andy Schneider will take over as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Horizon Air. These changes aim to strengthen coordination between the mainline and regional carriers as they prepare for future operational challenges.
Under this new structure, Berry succeeds Constance von Muelhon, who has been with Alaska Airlines since 2011 and will serve in an advisory capacity until her retirement in February 2026. Previously, Berry held the position of President at Horizon Air and has extensive experience within the industry, including serving as Executive Vice President of Cargo.
Andy Schneider, a veteran of over 35 years at Alaska Air Group, will step into the leadership role at Horizon Air. As the current Senior Vice President of People at Alaska Airlines, Schneider brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new position.
Strategic Leadership Moves Amid Expansion
These leadership transitions occur at a pivotal moment for Alaska Airlines, which is currently integrating Hawaiian Airlines into its operations. The two airlines are working to obtain a single operating certificate, a complex process that will require adept management and coordination from both Berry and Schneider.
Alaska Airlines is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting from its traditional model as a low-cost carrier in the Pacific Northwest to a more diversified airline that now operates a mixed fleet, including Boeing and Airbus aircraft. This includes the recent acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, which introduces new aircraft types such as the Airbus A321neo and A330. The airline is also preparing to operate long-haul flights, a first in its history.
The competition in the airline industry is fierce, particularly from major players like Delta Air Lines. With Alaska Airlines planning to initiate Boeing 787 flights to Europe in 2026, it is entering a crowded market where Delta has established a strong presence in long-haul travel.
Implications for Employees and Customers
For employees, these planned leadership changes are intended to ensure stability within the organization. Alaska Airlines emphasizes that these transitions are not reactive but rather part of a strategic succession plan. With von Muelhon remaining as an advisor, the company aims to facilitate a smooth transition for Berry into the COO role.
For customers, the upcoming winter and summer seasons will serve as a critical test of operational consistency as Alaska Airlines seeks to maintain its service reputation. The airline’s operational strategy has historically relied on high aircraft utilization and robust regional feed, which will be vital as it navigates this new phase of growth.
As Alaska Airlines faces increased competition from Delta, which has announced new flights to Rome and Barcelona, the effectiveness of its leadership changes may play a crucial role in the airline’s ability to sustain its market share and operational integrity.
Overall, Alaska Air Group’s focus on promoting from within reflects its commitment to leveraging internal expertise while adapting to the evolving demands of the airline industry.
