St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Windsor is set to expand with the addition of eight new classrooms, following the awarding of a construction tender. The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) granted the contract to Alliance General Contracting of Windsor Inc. during a board meeting held earlier this week.

In March 2024, the Ontario Ministry of Education allocated over $3.6 million in funding for the construction project. An additional $450,000 was provided in June 2025, bringing the total funding to approximately $4.1 million. The winning bid from Alliance General Contracting was notably lower at $2.9 million, allowing for potential savings.

Emelda Byrne, the director of education for WECDSB, highlighted that the school currently accommodates 1,350 students, with seven portable classrooms already on-site. The new classrooms will be constructed at the school’s northeast end, located at the intersection of McHugh and Clover.

Byrne expressed optimism regarding the project’s budget. “We hope to retain any remaining funds since the project is under budget,” she noted. “Once the project is completed, we will assess if there are any extraordinary costs that need addressing and, if so, seek permission from the Ministry of Education to utilize leftover funds for other capital projects.”

Construction is set to commence on October 1, 2023, with an expected completion date of December 2026. While the exact timeline for the start of construction is still pending, the contractor has confirmed their readiness to begin work.

The expansion at St. Joe’s reflects the growing need for educational facilities in Windsor, ensuring that the school can continue to provide quality education to its increasing student population.
