The DeKalb County Health Department has announced the availability of walk-in flu vaccinations for both adults and children, effective immediately. Individuals can receive a flu shot without an appointment five days a week at the health department’s clinic located at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb. The clinic operates from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

In a press release discussing the initiative, Lisa Gonzalez, the Public Health Administrator for DeKalb County, emphasized the importance of vaccination as a primary defense against influenza. “Getting your annual flu shot is one of the most effective steps you can take to avoid getting sick, reduce the severity of illness if you do catch the flu, and help protect vulnerable members of our community,” Gonzalez stated.

The flu vaccine is not advertised as free, but the health department accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare Part B, at no cost to the patient. While the vaccine is available to anyone aged six months and older, minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive the shot.

Health Officials Encourage Preventive Measures

In addition to vaccination, health officials recommend several preventive measures to help curtail the spread of influenza. These include covering coughs and sneezes with the elbow, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and regularly disinfecting commonly touched surfaces. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap is unavailable, is also encouraged as an effective strategy to prevent illness.

Although receiving the flu shot does not guarantee complete immunity from the virus, research indicates that it can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the likelihood of hospitalization. With flu season approaching, local health authorities are urging community members to consider vaccination as a vital part of their health strategy.
