Aid Flotilla to Gaza Continues Despite Israeli Military Threats

A flotilla carrying aid to Gaza remains steadfast in its mission despite facing what it describes as “intimidation tactics” from the Israeli military. The Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of approximately 45 vessels, departed from Spain last month with the goal of breaking Israel’s blockade of the war-torn Palestinian territory, which the United Nations has indicated is experiencing famine conditions.

As the flotilla approached waters near Egypt on September 15, Israeli naval forces reportedly conducted an operation aimed at intimidating the ships. The organisers stated that the Israeli military’s actions included aggressive maneuvers against their vessels. The flotilla has previously experienced interception attempts, particularly during earlier voyages in June and July.

Flotilla’s Journey and International Responses

After a ten-day stop in Tunisia, where the flotilla faced drone attacks, it resumed its journey on September 15. One of its key vessels, the Alma, was reportedly circled closely by an Israeli warship, while another vessel, the Sirius, experienced similar harassment. On board the Sirius, French lawmaker Marie Mesmeur observed at least two unidentified ships nearby, noting that communications were disrupted during these encounters.

The flotilla has conveyed its commitment to continue its path despite warnings from Spain and Italy, both of which have deployed naval escorts and have urged the ships to remain outside of Israel’s declared exclusion zone, which extends 150 nautical miles from Gaza. Oscar Lopez, Spain’s digital transformation minister, emphasized the importance of adhering to this zone, stating that the naval escort would not cross into it.

Italian officials have likewise called for the flotilla to “stop now,” as their frigate maintained position at the exclusion limit, broadcasting messages urging the activists to abandon their mission. The activists accused these countries of attempting to “sabotage” their humanitarian efforts.

Global Reactions and Concerns

In a statement emphasizing the importance of restraint, South Africa called for caution against any unilateral actions that could escalate tensions or threaten lives. The South African government stressed that the safety of all unarmed participants in the flotilla, including South African citizens, is of utmost priority.

In a joint appeal, Italy and Greece urged Israeli authorities to ensure the safety and integrity of the flotilla’s participants while simultaneously advising the flotilla to avoid actions that could be exploited by those opposed to peace.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asserted that the activists do not pose a threat to Israel, expressing hope that the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu would not take aggressive action against the flotilla. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on the activists to reconsider their journey, suggesting that it could undermine peace efforts currently being negotiated with the United States.

As of 12:30 GMT on Wednesday, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila reported that the flotilla was approximately 118 nautical miles (around 220 kilometers) from the Gaza Strip, reaffirming their determination to sail undeterred by Israeli threats. Alongside activists like Mandla Mandela and French-Palestinian Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, the flotilla continues its mission to deliver much-needed aid to the beleaguered region.
