Munro Lake Wildfire Stabilized as Firefighters Intensify Efforts

The Munro Lake wildfire in Peachland is now classified as being held, indicating that, based on current weather conditions and available resources, the fire is expected to remain within its established perimeter. As of October 1, 2023, all evacuation alerts and orders remain in effect, particularly for the ZipZone Adventure Park located at 5875 Brenda Mines Road.
According to the latest update from the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the fire has grown by approximately two hectares, bringing its total size to 383 hectares. This update, released on the morning of October 1, marks the first significant communication since September 29. Currently, 100 firefighters are actively engaged in combating the blaze using direct attack techniques. Fire crews are also working to establish and reinforce containment lines along the fire’s perimeter.
As outlined in BCWS’s update, the region is expected to experience a downtrend in weather conditions, which includes cooler temperatures and potential precipitation. “We can expect higher relative humidities throughout the region in the coming week,” the statement noted. However, the report cautioned that isolated pockets of increased fire behavior could still occur in areas where fuels remain dry and where wind and slope conditions align.
In addition to the ground crews, there are currently two helicopters and structure protection teams on-site to assist in controlling the wildfire. The BCWS confirmed that despite the positive developments, evacuation alerts for surrounding areas are still in place.
The Munro Lake wildfire was first detected on September 25, 2023. Since then, it has become one of five out-of-control wildfires currently affecting the province. The BCWS reported that light rain of 1.4 millimetres fell on the area on September 30, contributing to the firefighting efforts. A mix of sun and clouds is forecasted for the area, with a 40 percent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms later in the day.
There is no air quality advisory currently in effect, although gusty winds from the southwest at speeds of up to 40 km/h are anticipated. Residents and visitors in the vicinity are advised to stay informed and adhere to evacuation orders as efforts continue to stabilize the situation.
