Vancouver’s Culinary Scene Shines with Two Michelin Stars

Two Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, Sumibiyaki Arashi and Sushi Hyun, have been awarded prestigious Michelin stars, enhancing the city’s reputation as a culinary destination. This recognition marks a significant achievement, bringing the total number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Vancouver to 12.
Recognition for Culinary Excellence
The Michelin Guide commended Chef Pete Ho of Sumibiyaki Arashi for establishing a “new gold standard of yakitori,” referring to the popular dish of grilled chicken skewers. This accolade underscores the restaurant’s commitment to excellence and innovation in Japanese cuisine.
Sushi Hyun received accolades for embodying Japanese luxury that “pervades every element of the meal,” showcasing the restaurant’s dedication to quality and presentation. Both establishments reflect the vibrant culinary landscape of Vancouver, which continues to attract food enthusiasts from around the globe.
Additional Recognitions and Context
Alongside these star awards, Good Thief, a restaurant specializing in Vietnamese cuisine, earned the Bib Gourmand designation. This honor recognizes eateries that provide high-quality meals at reasonable prices, further emphasizing the diverse culinary offerings in the city.
Vancouver’s Michelin journey began in 2022 when it was included in the guide’s inaugural Canadian edition, alongside Toronto. Earlier this year, Michelin expanded its coverage with a guide focused on Quebec, reflecting the growing interest in Canadian gastronomy.
This report, originally published by The Canadian Press on October 2, 2025, highlights Vancouver’s evolving food scene and the increasing recognition of its culinary talent. As the city continues to gain accolades, it solidifies its status as a prominent player in the international dining landscape.
