Senators Restrict Reimbursement for Spousal Language Training

The Senate of Canada has implemented new rules that prohibit senators from being reimbursed for expenses related to their spouses’ language training. This decision was made during a committee meeting focused on internal economy, budgets, and administration, held on March 14, 2024. The changes come in response to revelations that Quebec Senator Amina Gerba claimed nearly $22,000 for two English-language training courses for herself and her husband in Vancouver during 2023 and 2024.

The Senate committee has now urged members to consider either utilizing the free language courses provided by the House of Commons or attending classes in the National Capital Region or their home provinces. This initiative aims to reduce unnecessary taxpayer expenses while ensuring that senators have access to language training. During the committee hearing, officials noted that only 16 senators participated in the free courses last year, although the exact number of those who traveled for classes was not disclosed.

In addition to the reimbursement restrictions for language training, the committee also approved a motion to impose a moratorium on reimbursing senators who travel with their spouses for official duties. These measures are part of a broader effort to increase transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayer funds by public officials.

As discussions continue regarding the management of expenses within the Senate, these new policies reflect an increasing scrutiny of how public resources are allocated. The hope is that these changes will foster a more responsible approach to spending while maintaining the necessary support for senators to effectively serve their constituents.
