This year, the DeKalb County Community Foundation awarded scholarships totaling more than $436,000 to 169 students in the region, enabling them to pursue higher education. Recipients received an average of over $2,500 each, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. The foundation continues to support local education, with various funds aimed at assisting students at different levels of their academic journey.

In the current academic year, the foundation allocated $51,925 in financial assistance for students attending two-year colleges and trade schools. An additional $285,100 was designated for those enrolled in four-year colleges, while $99,050 benefited scholars pursuing postgraduate degrees. These scholarships reflect the community’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities.

Distribution of Awards by School

The total awards for the Class of 2025 varied significantly by school. Notable allocations included $91,825 for students at Sycamore High School, $70,400 for DeKalb High School, and $59,050 for students at Northern Illinois University. Other schools received the following amounts:

– Genoa-Kingston High School: $41,250
– Indian Creek High School: $25,600
– Sandwich High School: $5,700
– Somonauk High School: $12,600
– Non-local high school: $15,200
– Kishwaukee College: $39,625 (26 awards)

The scholarships are made possible by the generosity of individuals and organizations who recognize the importance of education. Many donors establish scholarship funds to honor loved ones, support students in specific career fields, or celebrate personal achievements.

New scholarship initiatives introduced this year include the DeKalb High School Outstanding ESL Student Scholarship, the Dombek Family Community Service Scholarship, the Samardzija-Gutesha FFA Scholarship, and the Sharon Sue Betts Wiggins Mier Scholarship. These awards represent a growing recognition of diverse educational needs within the community.
