The recent wildfire near Lake George in Nova Scotia has been declared under control, according to the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The fire, which covered an area of 288 hectares, is responding positively to suppression efforts, and officials do not anticipate its size will increase. DNR expects the fire to be fully extinguished before the onset of winter conditions.

Efforts to manage the wildfire have been ongoing, with crews actively monitoring for hot spots. In a post on X, DNR detailed their procedure: “Crews walk through the active fire zone, smelling for smoke and feeling the ground for heat with their hands.” They employ techniques such as digging and using water to extinguish any remaining hot spots.

Evacuation Order Lifted

The wildfire prompted an evacuation order on September 29, 2023, affecting 353 properties in the vicinity. To support displaced residents, a 24/7 evacuation shelter was established at the Louis Millett Community Complex.

On Wednesday, DNR announced that residents could return to their homes the following day, as the situation stabilized with the fire being held at its current size. Fortunately, no structures have been reported damaged as a result of the fire.

As the community begins to recover, DNR continues to monitor the area closely, ensuring that all safety measures are taken to prevent any resurgence of the wildfire. The department remains committed to providing updates as necessary to keep residents informed about their safety and the status of the fire.
