Google Nest Speakers Shine with Colorful Gemini Update

Google has announced an exciting firmware update for its Nest Mini and Nest Audio smart speakers, enhancing the visual experience with a vibrant array of colors. The new update, version 3.77.500695, introduces a dynamic light display that showcases multiple colors whenever users say, “Hey Google.” This change enhances the aesthetic appeal of the devices and aligns with Google’s ongoing integration of its Gemini AI platform into its smart home ecosystem.

The update is currently being rolled out to users enrolled in the Preview Program. Upon activation, the speakers will cycle through a spectrum of colors, including blue, red, yellow, and green, before reverting to the standard white light. This visual upgrade is particularly noticeable on the Chalk and Charcoal models, where the colored lights contrast sharply against the neutral tones.

Integration of Gemini AI Enhances User Experience

Beyond mere aesthetics, the introduction of colored lights is a strategic move by Google to further embed its Gemini AI capabilities into existing hardware. This initiative is part of the broader “Gemini for Home” program, which aims to unify the visual style of devices within Google’s smart home range. The company has committed to updating “every speaker, smart display, camera, and doorbell” released over the past decade, although not all devices will receive the same functionality.

To access the new features, users can open the Google Home app on their smartphones and navigate to their Nest speaker’s device settings. Under Device information, users can enroll in the Preview Program, and once confirmed, they should check for the firmware update. After installation, the colorful light displays will activate with the familiar wake word.

Future Rollout Plans and Accessibility

Google is implementing the Gemini for Home features in phases, beginning with the Early Access program for users in the United States, set to commence on October 28, 2025. Following this initial rollout, the company plans to expand access to additional countries in early 2026.

While some older models may not support the full capabilities of the Gemini Live experience, Google’s commitment to enhancing its existing product lineup demonstrates a dedication to maintaining relevance and functionality within its smart home offerings.
