Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of Butterfield Acres, a petting farm in Calgary, following the detection of **nine cases** of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). AHS officials were informed of the situation on **October 16, 2023**, leading to a formal closure order issued the same day. The farm had already voluntarily shut its doors from **October 13 to 17** in response to the outbreak.

The closure will remain in effect until AHS deems it safe for Butterfield Acres to reopen. AHS emphasizes that while HPAI primarily affects birds, there is a potential risk of human infection through direct contact with infected animals. Fortunately, the agency has stated that the risk to the general public remains low.

Visitors to the farm between **October 6 and 12** are being advised to contact the health hotline **811** if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat. AHS reassures the public that those without symptoms do not need to seek medical advice.

Understanding Avian Influenza

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, can manifest with symptoms that vary in severity. According to AHS, the most prevalent symptoms include respiratory issues, fever, and general malaise. The health agency continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

The closure of Butterfield Acres serves as a precautionary measure to protect both public health and the welfare of the birds at the facility. AHS is actively working with local health authorities to ensure that guidelines are followed and that appropriate measures are taken during this health concern.

As the situation develops, AHS advises the public to remain informed and adhere to health recommendations. The agency is committed to providing timely updates regarding the status of the petting farm and any further measures that may be required to safeguard public health.
