Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Welcomes Throne Speech Focus on Education
The Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation (STF) expressed satisfaction with the provincial government’s commitment to public education, highlighted in the Throne Speech delivered on March 15, 2024. In an official press release, the STF emphasized that the Government of Saskatchewan has acknowledged the significance of investing in the education sector, a shift that follows over a decade of financial constraints.
Samantha Becotte, President of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, remarked on the importance of this renewed commitment. “Education works and investing in public education is an investment in our province’s future,” she stated. Becotte noted that discussions with the Minister of Education, Everett Hindley, have been constructive, focusing on collaborative solutions to the challenges faced by students and educators alike.
The recent negotiations concluded with an arbitrated decision that allocated an additional $20 million annually for public education. This funding is expected to support the hiring of approximately 500 new teachers, aimed at addressing the complexities of classroom environments. Becotte acknowledged this as a significant advancement but also stressed that further efforts are necessary.
“While this is a positive step forward, our work is not done. Additional funding and collaborative efforts are needed to solve the challenges in our schools and meet students’ needs,” Becotte added. The STF remains dedicated to partnering with the Ministry of Education and various stakeholders to foster a better educational landscape for all.
The Throne Speech marks a pivotal moment for public education in Saskatchewan, reflecting a shift in priorities that aims to enhance educational quality and student support. As the province moves forward, the STF’s commitment to advocacy and collaboration remains strong, emphasizing that the future of education is a shared responsibility.
