Trey Vaval Shines as Double Finalist for CFL Awards

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ returner Trey Vaval has emerged as a standout player, earning nominations for two prestigious Canadian Football League (CFL) awards. On Thursday, Vaval was announced as the West Division finalist for both the Most Outstanding Rookie Award and the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player Award. This recognition marks a significant achievement for the 25-year-old athlete, who has made a notable impact in the league this season.

Despite Vaval’s accolades, he is the only Blue Bombers player to advance to the final round of voting. Running back Brady Oliveira, who previously won the most outstanding player and Canadian awards, will not repeat his success this year. Additionally, defensive back Evan Holm and tackle Stanley Bryant also missed out on nominations for their respective categories.

Vaval’s impressive season includes leading the CFL with four kick return touchdowns. He also set a new club record for the most missed field goal return yards in a single season, breaking a 25-year-old record. Furthermore, he demonstrated versatility by making four starts at cornerback this season. His remarkable performance earned him unanimous selection for both team awards last week.

In the competition for the Most Outstanding Rookie Award, Vaval will face off against Devin Veresuk of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The nominee for the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player Award from the East Division is Lirim Hajrullahu, a former Bomber now with the Toronto Argonauts.

Other finalists for the Most Outstanding Player Award include Nathan Rourke of the BC Lions and Bo Levi Mitchell from the Tiger-Cats. Meanwhile, former Bombers offensive lineman Jermarcus Hardrick, now with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, is nominated for the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award.

The Bombers are currently preparing for their upcoming game against the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Semifinal scheduled for Saturday. However, the team faces challenges as receiver Nic Demski is doubtful to play due to a hamstring injury, and backup quarterback Chris Streveler has been ruled out after re-injuring his surgically repaired knee in the regular season finale.

The CFL Awards will take place on November 13, 2025, during Grey Cup week in Winnipeg, providing a platform to celebrate the league’s top performers. As anticipation builds for the awards, Vaval’s nominations highlight his significant contributions to the Blue Bombers and the wider CFL landscape.
