Canadians Set to Receive Cash from $14.4 Million iPhone Settlement
Eligible Canadian iPhone users will receive cash payments as part of a settlement stemming from a class-action lawsuit against Apple Inc. and Apple Canada. The British Columbia Supreme Court approved the settlement of $14.4 million in March 2024, concluding a legal battle that began in 2018. The lawsuit claimed that certain updates to Apple’s iOS software, specifically versions 10.2.1, 10.3, 11, and 11.2, caused iPhones to experience issues such as premature aging, degradation, or unexpected shutdowns.
The controversy surrounding these software updates became known as “batterygate,” as users reported significant problems with their devices’ performance. While Apple denied any wrongdoing, the company agreed to pay a settlement to affected users without admitting fault.
The deadline for submitting claims for the settlement has now passed. As of November 20, 2025, updates indicate that the review process of submitted claims has been completed. Payments to those with approved claims are expected to be distributed in early 2026.
If users have not received notification regarding their claims, they are encouraged to use the chatbot available on the official Canadian iPhone Power Management Class Action website to check the status of their submissions.
Eligible claimants include Canadians who owned or operated specific iPhone models, including the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus, with iOS versions mentioned earlier, installed or downloaded before December 21, 2017. Depending on the number of claims submitted, eligible users could receive between $17.50 and $150.
The class action highlights ongoing concerns regarding consumer rights and technology companies’ practices. As the settlement process unfolds, many Canadians await their share from this significant case against a major tech entity.
