Jose Ramirez Nears Major Contract Extension with Guardians
Jose Ramirez is on the verge of signing a significant contract extension with the Cleveland Guardians that could keep him with the franchise until 2032. The proposed deal, according to multiple sources, would modify his existing contract, which is currently set to run through 2028, absorbing the years from 2026 to 2028 into the new agreement. Should this deal be finalized, it would result in Ramirez earning a total of $175 million over the final years of his career, with $106 million being new money.
The details of the extension reveal that Ramirez, who was recently voted the fifth-best player in Major League Baseball, will continue to earn $21 million in 2026, $23 million in 2027, and $25 million in 2028. The additional years from 2029 to 2032 would account for the new money, ensuring a lucrative end to his playing days. It is noteworthy that $70 million of this amount will be deferred, a factor that, while substantial, may not dominate the conversation around the deal.
The Guardians have occasionally been criticized for not fully leveraging their star players, but this move signifies a commitment to retaining talent. Ramirez has expressed his desire to remain in Cleveland throughout his career, demonstrating loyalty to a franchise that has been a significant part of his life. His willingness to accept a deal that might not maximize his financial potential elsewhere reflects his commitment to winning with the Guardians.
As he continues to excel on the field, Ramirez is poised to set numerous franchise records, possibly solidifying his legacy in Cleveland. The Guardians’ ownership may eventually consider honoring him with a statue to commemorate his contributions if he maintains his current trajectory over the next decade.
This contract extension not only serves as a boon for Ramirez but also provides a positive outlook for the Cleveland fanbase, who can expect to see their star player leading the team for several more years. The potential for continued success and an enduring legacy makes this a significant moment for both the player and the franchise.
