The Municipality of Meaford has announced the launch of a short-term rental (STR) registry in 2023, marking a significant step towards the implementation of a comprehensive STR program scheduled for 2026. This initiative, approved by the local council, aims to create a robust framework for overseeing short-term rentals, enhancing safety and accountability within the community.

Strengthening Safety and Accountability

According to a media release from the municipality, the registry is intended to establish “clear administrative foundations for STR oversight.” Amy Cann, Meaford’s Director of Development Services, emphasized the importance of this development. “Launching this registry is an essential first step in strengthening safety, accountability, and clarity for short-term rental operators and the community,” Cann stated.

The municipality encourages all STR operators to register, which will involve documenting crucial safety and operational details. These include a fire safety plan, parking plan, and an owner code of conduct. By gathering consistent information now, Meaford aims to build a solid foundation for the licensing framework that will be introduced in the subsequent years.

Preparing for Future Licensing Phases

Meaford’s initiative is designed to support safe and responsible rental activities. It anticipates that the requirements established through the registry will prepare owners for future licensing phases planned for 2027 and 2028. The STR application form is readily accessible for download, and completed forms can be submitted via email, mail, or in person, accompanied by a registration fee of $50.00.
