Ottawa Councillors Propose Compensation for Transit Disruptions
Two city councillors in Ottawa are advocating for compensation options for transit riders following a recent disruption on the city’s light rail transit system. The incident on February 6, 2024, involved a halted LRT train on Line 1, which caused significant delays for many passengers. In response, councillors Sean Devine and Shawn Menard submitted separate motions to the public transit agency, OC Transpo, suggesting the possibility of offering refunds, discounts, or fare credits to affected customers.
Devine emphasized the importance of accountability in public transit systems. He pointed out that many other cities provide service guarantees, allowing riders to receive compensation when services fall short of expectations. “From a purely business level, customers have every right to expect if they pay for a service, they get that service,” he stated. Devine reinforced the notion that failing to deliver the promised service warrants a refund.
In contrast, Ottawa’s mayor, Mark Sutcliffe, expressed opposition to the councillors’ proposals. He argued that the focus should be on increasing investment in public transit rather than diverting funds for compensation. “I am determined to invest more money in public transit, not less. I don’t want to take money out of the public transit budget that could go towards improving service,” Sutcliffe remarked.
The call for compensation comes as OC Transpo faces further operational challenges. Recently, the agency removed approximately 70 percent of its O-Train fleet from service due to ongoing issues with wheel assemblies. This decision has led to warnings for riders about potential delays during peak hours as the agency attempts to resolve the matter.
The motions proposed by Devine and Menard are set to be debated during a city council meeting scheduled for February 11, 2024. As the discussions unfold, the outcome may significantly impact the future of Ottawa’s public transit policies and the expectations of its riders.
