Refire Kitchen has officially opened its doors at the Old Farm Market in the Cowichan Valley, providing convenient meal options for local residents. As of January 10, 2024, customers can enjoy a variety of freshly prepared, “heat-and-eat” meals including soups, stews, shepherd’s pie, and ribs. This new location adds to Refire Kitchen’s existing four outlets in the Victoria area, catering to the growing demand for accessible and nutritious dining options.

Old Farm Market’s general manager, Chris Steel, expressed excitement about the partnership. He emphasized the need for tasty, affordable meals in the community. “Most meals prepared by grocery stores are not usually that exciting,” Steel noted. He highlighted that traditional options often come at a steep price, with delivery meals costing around $30 and grocery ingredients for a nutritious meal averaging the same. Refire Kitchen aims to solve this issue by offering quality meals at reasonable prices.

The decision to introduce Refire Kitchen at the Cowichan location followed overwhelming demand observed at its Victoria store. “We brought Refire Kitchen into our Victoria store in September and there was so much demand for their meals, we decided to bring the service to our Cowichan store as well,” Steel added.

New Sporting Goods Shop to Open in Lake Cowichan

In another development for the Cowichan Valley, LC Sports is set to launch a new location in Lake Cowichan by early February. Owned and operated by Jason Fothergill, the shop will provide skate sharpening, hockey and baseball equipment, apparel, and other sporting goods.

Fothergill, who has deep family ties to Lake Cowichan and has been coaching in local minor hockey and baseball programs for nearly three years, recognized a gap in the market for sports equipment. “It was always in the back of my mind to open up something to serve the community and pair it with my passion for sports,” he explained. The new store aims to cater to both youth and adults, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing community engagement through sports.

Community Generosity Shines through Holiday Fundraisers

The Cowichan Valley community showcased remarkable generosity during the holiday season through multiple initiatives. The 17th annual “Stuff the Truck” event, organized by 89.7 Sun FM, collected a record-breaking 690 pallets of food from December 1 to 5, surpassing the previous record of 634 pallets set in 2024. The event supports local food banks and programs during the Christmas season.

The community’s contributions included significant donations from local businesses, such as Island Ford Superstore, which donated 70 pallets, and the Duncan Lions Club, which added 24 pallets. In a Facebook post, Sun FM expressed gratitude for the community’s spirit, saying, “There are no words for how blown away we are by our community’s giving nature.”

Another successful initiative was the Cram the Cruiser event held by the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, which took place at Canadian Tire on December 6. Donations from the community filled a police cruiser with toys, along with over $2,100 in cash donations and gift cards. The local Cowichan Valley Basket Society expressed appreciation for the overwhelming generosity, noting that over 600 families benefited from these contributions.

Enhanced Services for Transit Users

Transit users in the Cowichan Valley can soon expect improved services through the handyDART program. BC Transit has signed a contract with Vancouver-based Spare to implement new technology aimed at enhancing the customer experience for over 20,000 handyDART users across British Columbia.

The new system, named the Custom Transit Solution, is designed to reduce wait times for booking rides, streamline the booking process, and provide clearer communication regarding bus arrivals. According to BC Transit, this $6 million project was developed through consultations with customers, operating companies, and accessibility experts.

As the project progresses, BC Transit will collaborate with local government partners to devise a rollout strategy for the new technology. Updates will be provided to customers as more information becomes available.

The recent developments in the Cowichan Valley reflect a strong community spirit and a commitment to improving local services, from meal options to sporting goods and transit enhancements.
