Ryanair CEO Responds to Elon Musk’s Acquisition Proposal with Humor
The ongoing exchange between Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has taken a new turn, as O’Leary dismissed Musk’s suggestion of acquiring the budget airline. This verbal sparring comes in the wake of discussions regarding the installation of Starlink satellite internet systems on Ryanair aircraft.
O’Leary’s remarks on March 6, 2024, followed Musk’s comments on social media platform X, where he suggested purchasing Ryanair and humorously questioned why someone named Ryan was not in charge. O’Leary responded during an interview with an Irish radio station, referring to Musk as “an idiot” and emphasizing that he would “pay no attention whatsoever” to Musk’s insults.
Context of the Disagreement
The friction between Musk and O’Leary began when Ryanair opted against implementing Starlink due to concerns about additional costs. O’Leary stated that the installation of the satellite system would incur an estimated annual expense of $250 million, primarily due to increased aerodynamic drag and fuel costs. He noted that the installation of two antennas on each aircraft would contribute to an additional 2% increase in fuel consumption, resulting in roughly $200 million in extra fuel costs.
Despite acknowledging the effectiveness of the Starlink system, O’Leary expressed skepticism about the demand for such a service. He estimated that fewer than 5% of passengers would be willing to pay extra for internet access on Ryanair’s short-haul flights, which average around one hour and 15 minutes.
Musk, who acquired X in 2022 for $44 billion, countered O’Leary’s comments by labeling him an “utter idiot” and an “imbecile” on his platform. He has actively engaged his followers in discussions about the potential purchase, highlighting the playful nature of his comments.
Ryanair’s Position and Future Plans
In response to the escalating feud, O’Leary stated that while foreign citizens cannot hold a majority stake in a European airline, Musk is welcome to invest in Ryanair. He remarked, “If he wants to invest in Ryanair, we would think it’s a very good investment,” suggesting that it could yield better financial returns compared to his current investments.
O’Leary also addressed ongoing discussions with other telecommunications companies, including Amazon, which is set to launch its own satellite internet service, Kuiper. He reiterated that any agreement for onboard internet service would need to be structured in a way that lowers costs for Ryanair.
In a broader context, O’Leary has not shied away from expressing his opinions on Musk’s ventures, including recent controversies surrounding Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, which has faced criticism for generating inappropriate content. O’Leary described social media platforms, particularly X, as “a cesspit,” referencing the offensive nature of some content circulating online.
As this public spat continues to develop, Ryanair has leveraged the attention by launching a promotional seat sale featuring a caricature of Musk. O’Leary’s ability to turn criticism into publicity remains a hallmark of his leadership style, as he noted that he receives insults from a wide range of critics, including his own children.
The ongoing dialogue between these two high-profile figures highlights the collision of the tech and aviation industries, drawing public interest and media attention to both Ryanair and Musk’s ventures.
